Our Frequently Asked Questions Answered!
Are you considering racehorse ownership but unsure where to start? Joining a racehorse syndicate is one of the most accessible and exciting ways to become a racehorse owner without the full financial commitment of sole ownership.
Below, we answer the most frequently asked questions about joining our racehorse syndicate, ownership costs, race day access, prize money, and more.
If you’re exploring how to own a racehorse, this guide will give you clarity, confidence, and the next step forward.

What Is a Racehorse Syndicate?
A racehorse syndicate is a group of individuals who collectively own shares in a racehorse.
Instead of one person covering the full purchase price and ongoing training costs, ownership is divided into affordable shares. This allows members to experience the thrill of racehorse ownership at a fraction of the cost.
As a shareholder, you enjoy the benefits of ownership without taking on the full financial responsibility alone
What’s the Difference Between a Racing Club and a Syndicate?
This is one of the most common questions we’re asked. With a racehorse syndicate, you legally receive a beneficial interest corresponding to the share(s) purchased. Owners receive a shareholder contract and are entitled to prize money and sale proceeds, along with other financial benefits, in proportion to the share purchased.
With a racing club, you pay a membership fee and do not legally own a share of the horse. Access is typically limited to updates and race day experiences via ballots or random selection.
If you’re looking for genuine racehorse ownership with financial participation, a syndicate provides that structure.
Are Racehorse Syndicates Regulated in the UK?
Yes. All racehorse syndicates must be registered with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and operate in accordance with its rules and codes of conduct. This ensures transparency, accountability, and proper administration.
At Legacy, we are also members of the Racehorse Syndicates Association (RSA), reinforcing our commitment to professional standards and ethical ownership.
How Much Does It Cost to Join Legacy Racing Club?
Costs vary depending on several factors, including:
The individual horse
The share percentage you choose
We offer flexible options, including monthly instalments. Full details are provided on our website, and we’re always happy to discuss one-off payment options to suit your circumstances.
Racehorse ownership is more accessible than many people expect!
Are There Any Hidden Fees?
No — transparency is central to what we do.
The amount you agree to pay is fixed. There are no unexpected charges or surprise add-on's. Your payment includes all relevant expenses relating to the horse, so you know exactly where you stand from the outset.
Do I Receive Prize Money or Sale Proceeds?
Yes. If your horse wins prize money, you receive a proportional share based on your ownership percentage. The same applies if the horse is sold — proceeds are distributed in line with shareholding.
That’s the benefit of genuine ownership within a syndicate versus a racing club.
Can I Visit the Horse?
Absolutely. We encourage owners to be as involved as possible. We regularly organise yard visits and stable tours, giving you the opportunity to:
Meet the trainer and yard team
Watch your horse train on the gallops
Experience the behind-the-scenes world of racing
It’s a fantastic way to feel truly connected to your horse.
Can I Attend Race Days as an Owner?
Yes — and this is one of the highlights of syndicate ownership.
Thanks to our strong relationships with racecourses across the UK, we are not only able to secure the usual eight badges per race day but we also look to accommodate additional owners wherever possible, creating a fantastic atmosphere on race day.
Owner benefits typically include:
Owners’ parking
Hospitality access
Dedicated betting facilities
Access to the parade ring
Access to the winners’ enclosure and lounge when your horse wins
We also do our best to accommodate family members attending race days wherever possible.
Race days are unforgettable — and being in the owners’ enclosure makes them even more special.
Will I Receive Regular Updates?
Yes. We have partnered with The Racing Manager to provide:
Direct updates from the trainer
Exclusive photos and videos
Regular communication about your horse’s progress
As a minimum, you’ll receive a weekly update from our team, ensuring you’re always informed and directly involved with your horse’s progress.
Who Makes Decisions About the Horse?
We value your input and always take owners’ thoughts into consideration. However, day-to-day and strategic decisions ultimately rest with the trainer and our Racing Manager, ensuring professional expertise guides every step.
All significant decisions are carefully discussed between the trainer and syndicate members, with the horse’s welfare always placed at the forefront.
